The area around Rome is blessed with an abundance of villas and gardens, created for the most part during the Renaissance by wealthy aristocratic and papal families as rural retreats. We search out the best of these on this 10-day tour, which starts in Civita Castellana, in the Lazio countryside to the north of Rome, continues to the picturesque Castelli Romani hill town of Frascati, and ends in Rome, the ‘Eternal City.’ Highlights include the Pope’s superbly maintained gardens at the Vatican and Castel Gandolfo, his summer residence; the private garden of internationally renowned architect and scholar Paolo Portoghesi; the spectacular water gardens at Villa D’Este and Villa Lante, Vignola’s masterpiece; and four nights in Rome where we explore the city’s rich art and architectural heritage, including visits to Villa Farnesina and Villa Madama, two architectural jewels of the Italian Renaissance. Throughout the tour we stay in comfortable, well located hotels, explore unspoiled villages and hilltop towns, and visit historic sites such as Villa Hadrian, one of the world’s finest ancient monuments.
