Gardens, Palaces, and Manor Houses of Portugal

May 4–14, 2014

Portugal has some of the most enchanting and distinctive gardens in Europe, yet they remain, like much of the country’s rich heritage, well-kept secrets. From our bases in Setubal, Amarante, and Lisbon, the delightful capital city, we search out the best gardens in this fascinating country, including exquisite palace gardens, historic country estates, and manor house gardens that seldom feature on tours. Highlights include Solar de Mateus, a magical Baroque manor house and parterre garden; Castelo Branco’s Bishop’s Palace, with its graceful formal gardens and famous staircase; and Fronteira Palace, home to an elegant 17th century grand garden with an unforgettable tiled ornamental water tank and viewing gallery. In the course of our travels we get off the beaten track, visit timeless medieval villages and towns, taste wines from some of Portugal’s finest estates, sample highly rated regional cuisine, and stay in comfortable first class accommodations of character and charm.
