When it comes to garden tours, Germany probably does not come very high on most people’s list of favorite destinations. This is a pity, for Germany has an abundance of wonderful gardens, with the best rivaling anything on offer in more horticulturally fancied countries. To prove it, we have put together this new schedule focusing on gardens in the east of the country. For good measure we include two nights in Prague at the end of the tour, where we explore the city’s superb formal gardens around the castle.
Based mainly in the wonderful Baroque cities of Potsdam, Dresden, and Prague, we travel to historical gardens and designed landscapes of great beauty. Some, like the magnificent Sanssouci Park and the idyllic Worlitz landscape garden, are world famous; others, such as the elegant Baroque gardens at Gross-Sedlitz and Eremitage, are hidden gems that deserve to be much better known. Other highlights include Sanspareil, an extraordinary 18th century rock garden in the woods, and two gardens by Karl Foerster, the renowned plantsman who pioneered the use of perennials and grasses in the early part of the 20th century. As ever, we get off the beaten track at every opportunity, explore lost-in-time towns and villages once cut off behind the Iron Curtain, and enjoy scenic boat trips down the Elbe River and through Worlitz’s magical waterways. As an added treat, we attend the International Garden Festival in Berlin, a major event in the horticultural calendar held every two years.
