June 12–22, 2016
This new tour, which takes us through the ancient kingdom of Wessex, features some of England’s loveliest gardens at a time when the roses and early flowering perennials will be coming into their own. Highlights include the stunningly beautiful Longstock water gardens, the best of their kind in the British Isles; Hestercombe, where Edwin Luytyens and Gertrude Jekyll came together to create an Arts and Crafts masterpiece; Shute House, Geoffrey Jellicoe’s most celebrated garden; and 18th century Stourhead, one of the world’s great gardens. Lesser known gems, such as Houghton Lodge, Athelhampton, and the romantic manor gardens at Cothay and Cranborne, also feature, as do a selection of private gardens that seldom open to the public. Throughout the tour we will stay in comfortable, well located hotels, travel country lanes and back roads in search of rural England, and explore picturesque villages, unspoiled towns, and historic cathedral cities.
